Australia's captain Set to Play a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has taken 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series set to start on November 21 in Western Australia.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of being involved.

"We're aware that time is getting short and various factors at play, not only his injury, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he will feature a key capacity. With luck starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Injury History

The captain missed the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with setbacks in multiple past seasons forcing him out of three Australian summers in a short span.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

He mentioned that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but admitted it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the initial game as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the initial matches anyway. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for another day, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
