Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.

Video review technology will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the option to contest certain rulings made by the official, following the practice currently in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development follows just a year after the AELTC rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to review specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there is no limit on the number of challenges a player can ask for.

Case in Point

An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire watched a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another change at The Championships this year involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
